Delivering Integrated Business
and Residential Broadband Solutions
Integral Access, Inc., headquartered in Chelmsford
Massachusetts, is a privately held company that develops, manufactures and
markets next generation access equipment for the delivery of integrated business
and residential services by service providers. Integral Access currently
has products deployed in more than 40 major US metropolitan areas and 8 European
regions . Integral Access’ core competency is in the delivery of toll
quality packet voice, traffic management and robust simplified operations
and element management.
Integral Access believes that all services will be delivered over a converged
IP based infrastructure, providing the scalability, operational efficiencies
and framework for delivering enhanced services. A strategy based on deploying
a next generation packet platform, allows for the easy introduction and adoption
of not only evolutionary but also revolutionary broadband services with minimal
cost impact in the access portion of the network. From a tactical and strategic
perspective, it reduces the high cost of using architecturally fragmented
and specialized platforms and maximizes the utilization of the access network.
To support this vision, Integral Access has developed technology to enable
carriers to take advantage of the benefits that are delivered by Next Generation
Packet networks, including the necessary support for existing carrier infrastructures
and the tools to facilitate the transition to a managed IP network. The PurePacket
architecture delivers a variety of services on a single platform and ensures
quality of service.
The Integral Access product solution, PurePacket, is comprised of an access
aggregation platform (PurePacketNode), customer premises integrated access
devices (OUTburst) and an operations management system (PurePacketOMS). This
solution allows service providers to offer traditional and enhanced voice
and data services to Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SME) and broadband residential
services, enabling revenue growth with new services at lower costs than traditional
overlay solutions. The product has been designed to ease carrier adoption
and addresses a multitude of applications over a variety of network infrastructures.
The Technology
Integral Access’ PurePacket solution provides efficient delivery
of integrated voice and data services over DS1 or DSL and copper links. The
PurePacket system interoperates with business customer premise equipment
(CPE) such as voice equipment (key systems, PBX, handsets), LAN routers and
switches, as well as IP telephony equipment using the OUTburst Integrated
Access Devices (IAD’s) or TDM and IP based third party IADs. PurePacket
also addresses the broadband residential market as a next generation Access
Gateway with the ability to deliver line side POTS and ADSL services. The
PurePacketNode, which resides in the service providers’ central or
collocation office, aggregates both residential and business services and
delivers them to the appropriate voice and data Networks (e.g. PSTN, IP Telephony,
the Internet and managed IP networks). The PurePacketNode voice mediation
capability enables simultaneous offering of Class 5 and Softswitches based
services. (Figure 1).
PurePacket converts voice into packets at the system’s ingress and
carries converged voice and data traffic over single or multiple bonded access
links. The system applies dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) to the various
services while maintaining the Service Level Agreements (SLA) defined through
the PurePacketOMS. The combinations of DBA, voice activity detection and
silence suppression provides added bandwidth efficiency in the local loop
and the opportunity for increased revenue. Quality of Service is maintained
by robust traffic management in the access , using a combination of reservation,
traffic scheduling and Label Switching Label Switched Paths (LSP) are utilized
to manage the different Class of Services (COS) transported over the access
facilities to deliver unsurpassed quality of service while maximizing utilization
of the access network.
The PurePacketOMS is an open, CORBA-based, template driven user-friendly
system that behaves similar to a computer LAN environment with plug and play,
auto discovery and automatic provisioning of the network elements. |

The Services
PurePacket can be configured to offer a variety of bundled business services
over DS1 or DSL and over Ethernet for In-Building, Small Campus, and CoLo/CO-based
solutions, as well as to provide residential and SOHO services. Carriers
who decide to capitalize on the small-to-medium business market by offering
integrated broadband access solutions can provide secure and flexible bandwidth
for their data needs, as well as integrating or bundling other value-added
services such as business voice, enhanced voice and data services, or other
managed IP services as key differentiators. Bundling services makes the offerings
more attractive and has been shown to reduce operational cost and customer
churn. Integrated access offerings provide lower operational cost, improves
responsiveness and ultimately leads to greater customer acquisition and retention.
Revenues from these service bundles can be further improved by technology,
such as PurePacket, which reduces the amount of equipment required at the
Central Office and allows carriers to leverage greater bandwidth utilization
in the local loop to provide additional services.
The Integral Access PurePacket™ Multi-Service Access Solution
The Integral Access PurePacket™ solution consists of three integrated
parts:
PurePacketNode & PurePacketCompact
Multi-Service Access Platform that provides traffic aggregation, voice mediation
and traffic switching and routing. The highly flexible PurePacketNode can
be deployed in Central Offices, Collocation sites, Outside Cabinet Enclosures,
and large Multi-Tenant /Multi-Dwelling Unit environments. The PurePacketCompact
provides the same functionality and is tailored for In-Building and small
campus deployments. The Compact can also be configured as an IAD (named OUTburst
LB) for medium to large business applications. This common and flexible product
architecture allows the delivery of a variety of types of business and residential
services on a single platform and ensures the quality of service delivery.. |

PurePacket™ OMS, Operations & Service Management
System
The PurePacketOMS is an advanced, web-based, scalable management
system that intelligently automates converged IP service environments.
Using intuitive "point-and-click" Wizards and end-to-end
flow-through provisioning, richly differentiated IP services are created
in the OMS and delivered to PurePacketNodes and in turn to the end-user
CPE without the need of a truck roll. The PurePacketOMS has an open
and standards based architecture and interfaces CORBA, TL1, TMF814
or SNMP* to ensure seamless integration with new and existing front
and back office systems including CRM, billing and customer self-help
functions. SLA templates define and enforce CoS/QoS ensuring that critical
service levels are met for delivery of existing and next generation
services. |
